FAQ

Questions we get most.

How long does a commission take?

Four to eight weeks for most furniture, from deposit to delivery. Large dining tables, anything needing extra drying time, and busy seasons run longer. You'll get a specific lead time in the quote, before you commit to anything.

What does a custom piece cost?

Benches start around $1,150, coffee tables around $2,500, dining tables around $3,200. Price moves with size, species, and joinery. There's a full breakdown on the commissions page, and a quote is always free.

Do you ship furniture outside North Carolina?

Yes, crated freight anywhere in the lower 48, quoted at cost with no markup added. Freight on a dining table is genuinely expensive, so it's worth discussing before you get attached to the idea. Pickup in Asheville is free and local delivery within about two hours is a flat rate.

Can you match a piece I already own?

Usually we can get close, and sometimes we can get very close. Send photos in daylight plus the dimensions. Be aware that matching an aged finish exactly is difficult, and a new piece will keep changing color for its first year or two regardless.

What if I don't know what I want yet?

That's fine and it's most people. A room photo, a rough measurement, and a budget range is enough to start. Part of what you're paying for is help deciding — species, proportions, and edge treatment are decisions we make together.

Is the deposit refundable?

It's refundable until we buy your material, which usually happens within a week of the deposit. After that it isn't, because the stock was purchased specifically for your piece. We'll always tell you when that line is about to be crossed.

Will my piece look exactly like the photo?

No, and that's the honest answer. Every board is different. You'll approve photos of the actual stock before milling, so there are no surprises — but grain, color, and figure vary between boards of the same species, and screens render wood color imperfectly.

Do you do repairs on furniture you didn't build?

Sometimes. Solid wood repairs, refinishing, and reinforcing loose joinery are all things the shop can do. Veneer, laminate, and antiques with historical value are usually better off with a specialist, and we'll say so.

Can I visit the shop?

By appointment. It's a working shop with people in it, so we schedule visits rather than keeping open hours. If you're commissioning something large, seeing the stock in person is genuinely useful — email and we'll find a time.

How do I get involved with the workshop program?

Participation varies by project and we handle it case by case, with an emphasis on safety and on not publicizing anyone's story. If you work in recovery services locally, or you're in recovery yourself and interested, email us and we'll talk.

Do you buy lumber?

Yes — from regional mills and sawyers, and from people with felled hardwood trees, especially urban walnut, cherry, and oak. Send species, rough dimensions, and how long it's been down.

Something arrived damaged or wrong.

Tell us and we'll replace it or refund it, your choice. You don't need to return the original for small goods. The full terms are on the care and guarantee page.
