A commission is a conversation before it's a contract. Here's exactly how it runs, what it costs, and what you're agreeing to at each point — so there's nothing to find out later.

The process

Six stages, start to finish.

Nothing is binding until the deposit. Up to that point you can walk away, change species, change dimensions, or decide the whole thing was a bad idea — no hard feelings and no charge.

  1. Inquiry

    Day 0 · free

    You send dimensions, a photo of the room, and a budget range. Austin replies within two business days with a straight answer about whether it's a fit.

  2. Quote & sketch

    Within about a week · free

    You get a fixed price, a lead time, and a dimensioned sketch. No 3D renders — a clear drawing with real numbers on it does more good.

  3. Deposit

    50% to reserve the slot

    This is the commitment point. The deposit covers material and holds your place in the shop queue. Stock gets purchased and set aside for you.

  4. Board selection

    Before milling

    Photos of the actual boards going into your piece — figure, color, sapwood, knots, and any character we plan to keep. You approve before a saw touches it.

  5. Build

    4–8 weeks typical

    Progress photos at milling, glue-up, and finish. If something in the wood forces a change, you hear about it when it happens, not at delivery.

  6. Balance & delivery

    On completion

    Final photos, then the balance, then pickup or delivery. You get care instructions and the finish schedule in writing with the piece.

Pricing

Starting points, not final numbers.

Price moves with size, species, and joinery. Walnut costs more than oak. A breadboard end costs more than a straight edge. These bands are honest starting points so you know early whether we're in the same range.

Deposit

50% up front, balance on completion. The deposit is what buys your material, so it's non-refundable once stock is purchased.

Lead time

Four to eight weeks for most furniture. Large dining tables and anything needing additional drying can run longer, and you'll know that in the quote.

Delivery

Pickup in Asheville is free. Local delivery within roughly two hours is quoted flat. Beyond that, crated freight at cost with no markup.
