What we build
Furniture with one owner in mind.
Every commission starts with a real slab and a real room. Dimensions, species, and finish are yours to choose — the joinery and the standard are ours.
Live edge tables
Coffee tables, dining tables, and consoles in walnut, cherry, or sapele. Natural edge kept intact, voids filled with hand-tinted epoxy or left honest.

Benches & seating
Entry benches, window seats, and hall seating. Solid oak and walnut on steel or timber bases, sized to the wall you're putting it against.

Built to spec
Floating shelves, credenzas, desks, bar tops, and pieces that don't have a category yet. If it can be milled from solid stock, ask.

How a commission runs
Four steps, no surprises.
Step 1
Talk it through
Send dimensions, a room photo, and a rough budget. We'll tell you honestly whether it's a fit before anyone pays anything.
Step 2
Pick the board
You see photos of the actual slab or stock going into your piece, with its figure, color, and any character we plan to keep.
Step 3
Build
Typically four to eight weeks depending on size and drying. You get progress photos at milling, glue-up, and finish.
Step 4
Deliver
Free pickup in Asheville, local delivery within about two hours, or crated freight anywhere in the lower 48 at cost.
The shop
Woodworking asks for presence.
A board must be measured before it's cut. A joint has to be fitted with patience. A finish only gets better through preparation and repetition.
Trade Up Recovery Woodworks was founded by Austin Self on a simple belief: steady, meaningful work helps people build steady, meaningful lives.
The same practices a good piece of furniture demands — attention, accountability, humility, consistency — are the practices recovery demands. So the shop is built to teach both at once. It's a structured place where people in early recovery learn real woodworking skills, finish real work, and get the specific satisfaction of pointing at something solid and saying they made it.
When you commission a piece here, you're paying for the furniture. What comes with it is the workshop that made it possible.
Materials
Solid stock. Nothing hidden.
No veneer, no particleboard, no stain pretending to be a species it isn't. Grain, color shift, and small character marks stay where they are — they're what makes a piece yours and not a copy.
From the bench
Some of this doesn't photograph.

Small goods
Start with something small.
Coaster sets, valet trays, and cutting boards are cut from the offcuts of furniture work — same species, same finish, same standard. They ship free anywhere in the U.S. and they're the easiest way to see the work in person before commissioning something large.
